A futuristic dystopian world where large corporations colonize worlds, all presented in a satirical format. Meanwhile, I am a colonist on a lost ship and am recruited to solve the pending collapse from potential corporate malfeasance on the planet Halcyon. A perfect setting in this satirical format, in a 40-50 hour adventure. It is a fascinating presentation of an alternate world where corporations rule the world, and more, int his corner of the universe.

The setting of the Outer Worlds is a satirical and yet funny take on an alternate universe. The mega corporation gets away with everything and is a typical detective format where the protagnoist has to figure out a mystery that has the clues strewn everywhere. The plot is solid and flows well and has no flaws, but slightly bit cliché. The futuristic colony system is dominated by a mega corporation that paints itself as care, while it offers choices, and power all the while as a mega landlord. Efficiency and power is quite nice. Technology and User interface is a retropunk feature that seeming is has no frills and utilitarian, as if most have stagnated from the culture and technology of 1950s Americana.
Corruption at its heart, patriotism, and usage of people to accomplish its goals. That defines the heart of the game’s Spacer’s Choice corporation, and is functionally a parody fo a parody; this seems to be inspired by the East Indian Company.
Their humor is honestly kinda Satirical yet serious, and almost in your face style of humour. That one is a bit direct and I like it. It may take a bit for it to sink in, or get a bit over the top boring.

Art direction is perhaps the most attractive showcase. It is seemingly based off the 1940s/50s style art and culture from Hollywood, infused wit ha bit of retro-futurism. Even if the art has not changed much over the century, it still omni-present. The colour palette feels like it took a dramatic and yet bold approach, with a saturated and yet dated feel. It feels like it has been a used and still utilitarian feeling to it, as if it is chosen to fit an industrial feeling rather than beauty and aesthetic.

Music is pretty nice. I had a good time listening to the soundtrack while I was able to play, so it was enjoyable. Is it enough to listen to while outside the game. Give it a listen to. The main theme is nice as it radiates hipe, with a future that has a lot to do. Even with the stylized format and parody, it still pushess the desire of the humanity dreams to be better and possess a brighter future for itself. Progress.

I love the mechanics of the game. I can select and put focus on separate points that affect the ability of he player. They feel so differentiated to a point where I can do a lot with it, and feels like I need to conduct another playthrough to fully experience the mechanics of the game. In the end of it, I had a good time, and was tempted to play again for the builds.

Dialogue and writing is surprisingly well written for the game, which I was expecting cliches.
Also, to mention, the voice actors bring a lot of passion to the game and they are alive because of it.

Now what has been done in Spacer’s Choice that makes it different and worth better? There were some Spacer’s Choice Edition had some re-do of the artwork and changes in the color palettes, especially the tone. Some of the places feel a bit warmer and more soft, while some are more vibrant. Loading times feel a bit better. The level cap increased from level 30 to level 60. However, the saves cannot transfer.

Now, with all the fun I had in Halcyon, I had some experiences and caveats that somewhat thought was a bit mellow. Skills is capped at level 30, and feels a bit limiting. I would have benefited from a higher setting, which is done in the separate Spacer’s Choice Edition.

The main plot felt a bit shallow but it felt the cause to explore the world building and character development. Even though it was light, I can appreciate its moderate depths that got me appreciating it.
That is pretty much it.

Personally, I would love to have a slider that would adjust to he color palette, especially outdoors. At times, it does a bit of heavy duty work on the eyes.

Also, maybe its just me bit I would tone the humour a bit down.

I liked the game overall. A fantastic one. Its developer Obsidian made a game that is a solid game in the RPG world. In addition, I do think the game has some hallmarks of a Fallout game and should be familiar if someone played those games. Ironically, the games are now owned by the same company.

I’m surprised the publisher of the game is still a third party company called “Private Division”, which was renamed Fictions after it was sold off to private equity. Its sequel “The Outer Worlds 2” was published by Xbox Game Studios in October 2025, a surprising act. A new Version called “Spacer’s Choice Edition” was released in 2023, with significant changes to the mechanics, and graphics, and also higher level cap. If you do want to play that version instead, I recommend you get it, or buy the bundle.

“The Outer Worlds 2" is a sequel and is set in a time jump of 5 years in the future. It is worth a play through.

If anything, the game’s universe diverges in 1901, when President William McKinley, was not killed and serves out his term. Thus, the world does not see the trust busting that defines the modern day. Big business grows massively and dominate modern society. That situation leads us to have a great game in in the Outer Worlds.

Most mediocre 6 out of 10 game I've ever played. Got so bored I didn't even finish the 2nd DLC and the next game is better in literally every way.
