Metro 2033 Redux

Even though this game is really old, I love it so much. The atmosphere, story, and gameplay are timeless — it’s one of the best post‑apocalyptic shooters ever made. I highly recommend everyone to play it at least once.
The only thing I don’t like is the sound/character voice issue: when I turn a character’s face, the voice cuts off. Minor flaw, but the overall experience is still amazing.

Rating: 9/10 – A must‑play classic.

The sun is setting on yet another day in post apocalyptical Moscow. You know of the dangers that the night will bring, you should’ve been already back down in the tenuous safety of the metro system.
You’re weary, low on ammo, health and time. The filter of your gas mask, that keeps the death of the surface out, is getting more and more clogged. Your breathing gets labored.
You sneak through the remnants of a once great library, for information that was lost when the bombs fell. You slowly come into a hall, no one alive is in sight. Suddenly a massive black gorilla sized monster climbs through a hole in the wall, sees you and comes slowly closer, growling.
You heard the whispers, you remember Miller. If you look away, you die. If you run, you die. You either shoot or stand defiant. Your choice.

13 years ago I played the original game and it was a memorable, engaging, sometimes frightening masterpiece. Years ago I read the books by Dmitry Glukhovsky this series is based (Recommended for horror fans). I bought the Reduxes for 90% off and wanted to once again jump into this world.


The stability overall is great. The game ran on my system (5900X, 3080) very fast, usually around 180 to 250 fps at 3840x1600. One recurring bug that was annoying: Sometimes only looking with the mouse and moving with the arrow keys/WASD was still working, all other key were dead. Reloading the last checkpoint fixed it every time. One level had to be restarted, because one character got stuck after a gunfight (Dungeon).


Great. It’s a bleak world, the remaining population of Moscow is fighting for its survival with the harsh environment, its mutants and with each other. Factions war with each other. Fascists fight with communists, trade factions press on smaller stations and bandits fight with everyone. Nobody is safe. You’re tasked by your station to deliver a message of great importance. Failure would result in certain doom.


Excellent. Very dynamic. Linear and scripted, but very atmospheric. Often dark, tight and claustrophobic, sometimes vast and ominous. Lots of hidden secrets keep you searching, for resources are scarce. Especially in survival mode. Ammo is money, literally.


Very unconventional. Some classics, like revolvers, double barreled shotguns and AKs are here, but most weapons are fictional creations that suit the setting. Pneumatic weapons made from pipes, other weapons made from bicycle parts that shoot railway spikes. All different in strengths and weaknesses. Customization (Scopes, barrels, mods) is available, but expensive.

Throwables (Pipe bombs, molotov cocktails, knives) can save your bacon or keep the killing quiet.


Your brothers in arms feel pretty okay. Due to tight scripts and lots of commentary they can act realistic. Their shooting and reloading is unrealistically fast though.
Enemy AI varies a lot with the type of enemy you face. Some rush you, some ambush, some call for reinforcements and surround you. Others let you make the choice.


Graphics are still very good IMO. At release the original was a chore, the Redux ran great.
Everything feels lived and has the dirt and grime that makes the atmosphere that great.


If you want the ultimate in atmosphere and engagement, Ranger hardcore is the way to go. No HUD, only audio cues and a distinct difficulty increase. 2 weapons instead of 3, less ammo capacity, but more throwables. Enemies are not the usual bullet sponge BS. They deal more damage, but now can take much less bullets too. Which helps, since you are made of glass.

In survival mode you will run out of bullets a lot. In 2 levels I basically survived only on molotovs and throwing knives.


Achievements can be very hard, since most are missable. If you’re here for 100%, use a guide. It necessitates two playthroughs. I played it on normal, spartan mode (12 hours, 90% of achievements) and on Ranger hardcore, survival (8.5 hours).


Even without rose tinted classes this game is still great. Very easy to get into. The story pulls you in, the atmosphere keeps you on a razors edge.

For 90% off this is a steal. A now classic FPS. Highly recommended.
