How this works:

Anyone who is not a member of this Steam community group, can still play on our game-servers (assuming they are not banned), but will not have access to various special in-game features.
Anyone who shows-up as a "Member" of this Steam community group, is automatically granted access to some special in-game features (various types of "voting", "3rd-person", etc.) in our game-servers.
Anyone who shows-up as an "Officer" of this Steam community group (with the gold/yellow star "⭐" next to their name here), is also automatically an "administrator" of most of our game-servers.

Further, I have restored administrator access to most current or former (and, in some cases ancient) administrators from these Steam community groups:

Freaks & Misfits (now retired)
Saphe.Space (now retired)

For those who are administrators themselves, and perhaps do not remember all the other administrators in-game player names (since they do tend to change over time, and this group has existed in some form for probably over a decade now), you can lookup-up some of their former common names in this thread: Admin Info: List of current administrators. BTW: Access to that thread is restricted to existing administrators only, since administrators may want to keep some of that information (former names) confidential.

More regarding Counter-Strike:Source

Apparently, some time in 2025, Valve released an update for Counter-Strike:Source, which broke some (many?) custom maps. This is because the update changed the way the Source engine finds files on the game computer's file system to now be case-sensitive. On Windows game-clients, this is not an issue, since Windows file systems (FAT, NTFS, etc.) are inherently case-insensitive.

However, on Linux systems (probably including SteamOS), this is not the case - which means if the custom map references files in a different case than the exist on disk, the game will fail to load that file (typically a material/texture). This likely would effect trying to play many custom maps in Counter-Strike:Source on a Steam-Deck (or eventually a Steam-Machine).

Since Valve is not believed to be resolving this issue, the only fix is to resolve the case-mismatch issues within the custom map files themselves. Most of thse maps were made over a decade ago, and downloaded from sites such as GameBanana[gamebanana.com]. Many of these maps include custom textures that are not part of Counter-Strike:Source itself.

I have tested this fix with one custom map so far - the fight-yard style map "Kitty Buzzy". Overall the procedure is like this:

Decompile the map (.bsp file) with BSPSource.
During the decompile, extract all the custom textures/materials that were embedded in the map.
Rename all the custom texture/material files, and any sub-folder they use to be all lower-case.
Re-compile the map.
Use the "Lump Editor" feature of VIDE to re-embed all the custom texture/materials into the map (.bsp file).
Copy the map over to a Linux machine and test.
Go back and fix all the stuff that was missed (iteratively).

Needless to say that this is a lenghty process, performed on a per-map basis. I have completed my favorite map, and will now move onto other - slowly over the coming months. I have equipped my Cosplay-Strike:Source server with the fixed version of this map, and temporarily removed any other custom maps - which may not be fixed yet.

I will also re-upload any fixed versions of maps to GameBanana[gamebanana.com] for any other server operators who might want to support Linux and SteamOS clients.

Update regarding Counter-Strike:Source

Apparently the server has been somewhat broken since he last big update (almost a year ago on Feb 18th 2025). Valve must have deleted, renamed or moved some textures/materials that the custom maps depend-upon.

This is similar to what happened to some custom maps for TF2 after an update.

I found that running the "previous build" (from the list of CS:S betas) everything runs fine. So, I will be trying to embed the old textures directly into the map files to produce updated versions of the custom CS:S maps that work on the newer CS:S version. But, it may take some time.

CORRECTION: This issue appears only in the Linux-native CS:S client. On Windows CS:S client all the textures appear as expected. In theory, that should hold-true using Proton under Linux as well.

UPDATE: Under Proton (Windows version of the CS:S running under Linux or SteamOS) there is a compatibility issue resulting in a message such as:

You are in insecure mode. You must restart before you can connect to secure servers.

PS: Also added a case to Valve's issue tracker for CS:S here[github.com]. However, I do not expect this will ever actually be fixed - even though it also would affect SteamOS / SteamDeck / SteamMachine players similarly.
