A CRITICAL WARNING: THE REAL SHADOW GAME IS THE ECONOMY

This game is Free-to-Play, but it is NOT Free-to-Compete.
I detest the monetization in this game. Before you dive in, you must understand the crucial, "minuciosa" truth: this game's economy is predatory, especially for veteran players. When you start, you are flooded with Gems (la moneda F2P) from leveling up characters (the "Honeymoon" phase). After this phase ends, the Gem income slows to a trickle. This is where Konami traps you.
Staple cards (like Book of Moon or popular deck cores) are often intentionally split across multiple 200-pack Main Boxes. To get a 3-card playset, you may need to dig through 600 packs, costing thousands of Gems or hundreds of real dollars. Furthermore, Selection Boxes are limited-time, predatory Gacha traps, and many Structure Decks have evolved into "EX" paywalls, requiring real money. Konami also uses the Forbidden/Limited List not just for meta balance, but to "kill" old, accessible F2P decks to force players to invest in the newest boxes.

My Personal Take as a Veteran Fan

Yu-Gi-Oh! has been my favorite anime, manga, game, and hobby since I can remember.
I personally prefer the original Japanese names and voices (which I highly recommend). My favorite characters are Yusei, Paradox, Atem, Judai, Asuka, and Aki, and my favorite archetypes are Stardust, Sin (Malefic), D/D/D, HERO, Monarchs, Chaos, Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, Exodia, Labrynth, Different Dimension (D.D.), Timelord, Lightsworn, Lunalight, Primite, Burn, and Anti-Meta. As you can see I play mostly Fun and Anti-META Decks because playing the META... I have to say it, it is sooooo boring, seriously haha. But sometimes I can counter attack with my own Anti-META decks hahahha. Despite my criticisms, I play this game daily on both PC and Mobile and it is still my favorite game.

STORY AND NARRATIVE: 10/10

SOUND DESIGN & MUSIC: 10/10

This is the game's greatest strength. It is a living anime with original voice actors. The events let you relive iconic moments, and I love how the game's unique lore is official and complements the vast, existing Yu-Gi-Oh! lore.

Hearing the signature lines never gets old. The iconic music tracks are all here. Crucially, the game includes the original Japanese voice actors, which is the definitive way to experience the dialogue for veteran fans.

FUN FACTOR: 10/10

GRAPHICS & ART STYLE: 10/10

The "Honeymoon" phase is pure bliss. The core loop of dueling and unlocking Duelists is addictive. My main critique is the detestable lack of event variety; events are recycled constantly, but mostly the same series like (ZEXAL, ARC-V, VRAINS or SEVENS) with very little innovation or past events.

The 3D summoning animations for signature monsters are fantastic and cinematic. While the PC port is functional, the UI is still very clearly designed for mobile (verticality), but the graphics for the cards and duels themselves are polished.

GAMEPLAY & MECHANICS: 8/10

DIFFICULTY: 7/10

The Speed Duel format (3 monster zones, 3 spell/trap zones, 4-card starting hand) is a brilliant, fast-paced alternative to the TCG/OCG or Master Duel. The real game-changer is Character Skills. These anime-inspired abilities (like Destiny Draw) add a unique layer of strategy you cannot get anywhere else.

PVE is beautifully normal. The real challenge here is the PVP Ranked ladder or KC CUP like events. However, nowadays I don't enjoy the online play so much because it is constantly unbalanced, with the vast majority of players just using the current meta deck, which makes climbing a boring, repetitive grind rather than a test of skill.

PERFORMANCE & BUGS: 8/10

ACCESSIBILITY & SPECS: 3/10

As a PC port of a mobile game, it runs on virtually any hardware. However, it suffers from mobile-centric issues. The UI is not optimized for widescreen PC monitors, and the game is locked at 60 FPS (fine for a card game). Infamous connection drops in PVP (a "KaibaCorp" specialty) can cost you a rank-up match, which is incredibly frustrating.

This is the game's lowest point. As stated, I detest the monetization. It is accessible for "Free-to-Play," but not "Free-to-Compete." The predatory economy and "box-splitting" of staples makes building a single competitive deck an expensive, time-gated nightmare. This is a "pay-to-win" Gacha model disguised as a card game.

Final Thoughts:

Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links is both the best and worst way to be a Yu-Gi-Oh! fan.
It offers the greatest anime/character simulation on the market, period. The voice acting, the events, and the Speed Duel format are genuinely fun. However, this nostalgia is used as bait for one of the most ruthless, wallet-draining monetization schemes in gaming today.
Come for the anime nostalgia, but be prepared to either spend thousands of dollars or accept that you will never be truly competitive. It's a "Pot of Greed" that lets you draw two cards (Nostalgia and Fun), but its cost is far too high for most.
