There’s actually a lot of sad endings to the finale.
Also, Will is entering the gay community at the height of the AIDs epidemic. Deaths from AIDS peaked in 1995.
If Will were to die from AIDs, that would devastate Joyce and might destroy her relationship with Hopper. Now there is a chance Hopper would be able to help Joyce through Will’s death (having lost two daughters of his own) but it would be a rough time for both of them.
